Nitro Charger tid bits

Excerpts from Martin Broeders and Rocky Pirrone posting on Classic Funny Car Chat.

"The flamed car was a great match racer.... very easy to run and maintain....always put on a good show." "We started running when Goose's Chevy was still the rave...along with Ruth's Vic and Diamond Dave's T-Bird. lol... Nitro Neil still tells me about the first time he saw the old Charger....up at Broadway Bob's ... lol Bob had a video tape out the following year with good coverage of all the funnies that Labor Day weekend. The Daytona was finished in1994 and we ran it until till 1999 this car also doubled as the Jungle Jim Monza for the Revell display's in 1997. The Charger was on Darrel Starbird's mid west show car tour that year as well. Wish you guys lot's of luck and enjoy the Daytona...it treated me very well over the years and it was a great match racer for us.. Mart "

From another post - " The Daytona was built in 94 for myself and with Nelson Carter's input, when we couldn’t tag the 1970 Super Chief Charger in the 6's.The Daytona was conceived at Carter's house one evening over the debate of what was or would make a unique body/ paint combo reflecting the 60's and 90's. I ran the car and had a great time with it, the car also doubled as the Jungle's Monza for Randy Liberman at the Revell Nat's in 97 on short notice. I sold the Super Chief in Sept 1998 after Nelson and I talked about the pro's and con's of keeping it. Nelson had in our agreement first dib's on it, but passed and we agreed to let it go. We both had good luck with the car and some real bad luck with it...But over all some great memories with the Carter family and our travel's with it. In 2000 pending my divorce, everyone should try one of those... I parted out the operation and sold the Daytona to Rocky Perone in Sept.2000 , Frank Jonkman was there to help us that night and Frank and the Rinni Bros. got most of our spare parts. The car was a pleasure to drive and always treated me well. Carter and I where talking today about the cars and the way the nostalgia scene is going now and I’m still in amazement that the Daytona's original color paint scheme hasn’t been changed... That body and paint seem to flow together and I can't imagine it any other way. Mart "

Rocky Pirrone writes "The Nitro Charger, I prefer the chassis builder be listed as Marty Danko and Jerry Rightsell. when we bought the car, we had to completely redo the entire car to make it safe. Marty Danko did all the chassis updates. The Charger body was done by MRD. About the only thing we kept un-touched was the body, awesome paint. The motor was a 484 inch KB built my Tom Fox. 6-71 Mike Khul blower, Waterman fuel pump. Credit for redoing the car correctly goes to Bill Ellershaw and Danny Ellershaw. Thanks, Rocky"

Mouth of the dragon

We are running an early KB stage 3 block and Dart water heads. Approximately 424 C.I. - 4.187 bore and 3.85 stroke. We are V.R.A. legal, meaning 6-71 blower less than 18 over, 20 gallon pump, points mag modified by Cirillo, two speed trans etc.etc...It has taken nearly five months to assemble the engine. What can I say - work is a prerequisite to racing. We have had to update the chassis with helmet bars and moving uprights for the dry sump oil pump. Several other time consuming little things have been changed and added too. The list of updated safety items is staggering, but every bit necessary. In the end I know it will all be worth it.
